Mystery Rosy Ooze on Remote Tasmanian Shoreline Raises Concerns of Likely Algae Outbreak

Officials in the island state are working to identify a magenta ooze that has surfaced on a isolated coast, with a number of researchers concerned it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.

Widespread Appearance On Beaches

The pink-tinged sludge appeared along a stretch of a southern bay about 37 miles south of Hobart. A similar sludge has also been noted on areas of a nearby shore and a separate bay.

Examples Taken for Examination

Specimens have been collected and provided to the environmental agency for testing. A spokesperson stated that "algal blooms are a natural occurrence in response to shifts in food sources, temperature, rain or sunlight".

"The events are at times called red or pink tides because the outbreaks can change the water reddish," the spokesperson noted. "Few algal blooms are toxic, with several kinds serving as a primary source of energy for marine life in the aquatic ecosystem."

"The usual source of reddish water in local waters is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can create glowing light shows at night."

Increasing Occurrence Linked to Global Warming

Phytoplankton proliferations occur naturally but their occurrence has grown in recent times, in part due to environmental shifts and contamination that join together to create mineral-filled seas primed for the quick expansion of dinoflagellates.

Dinoflagellates are a marine plant that usually serve as the ocean's garbage cleaners. During a outbreak, there is a fast increase in their populations that disrupts the proper operation of marine environments.

These occurrences have been compared to underwater bushfires and can persist in growing as long as circumstances are favorable. In worse situations, vulnerable aquatic environments can be wiped out as sea creatures is killed or smothered, providing more nutrients for the outbreak.

Past Catastrophic Bloom in another region

South Australia recently confronted a severe phytoplankton proliferation along its southern coastline after a series of oceanic warm spells, which spread across thousands of square kilometres. The outbreak resulted in swimmers with sore eyes and severe coughing and may have caused the death of up to a quarter-million sea creatures across 400 different species, according to government calculations.

Scientist Opinion on the Local Case

A marine expert, who helped investigate the start of South Australia's algal bloom stated, based on photos of the Tasmanian outbreak, the most likely species involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "sea sparkle".

"We have seen many of these blooms around Tassie of late," she remarked.

The scientist said this organism did not create harmful substances similar to the type involved in South Australia's devastating event, but it does consume microscopic animals and "many fish eggs", meaning aquatic creatures were most at risk.

"Typically one notices a bloom of the organism after a bloom of another organism, or something like a fish reproduction," she noted.

Demands for Investigation and Safety Concerns

Lilly Henley, who collected samples of the pink sludge in the state, said it looked like the possible outbreak had "increased notably" and suggested the fish farming business was the most likely culprit, citing like situations in other places.

"Thus the state needs to send a firm alert here, the authorities and the regulators need to react to this. We need to examine the examples we've gathered and we need to inform the community here," she emphasized.

She said she had concerns for public safety after experiencing a prickling feeling along her body while being sprayed with tainted seawater.

Accounts of Dead Marine Life and Demands for Official Intervention

An environmental foundation has reported dead octopus and dead sea cucumbers washing ashore, with a longtime environmental campaigner describing the situation as an "environmental emergency" and urging the state premier to visit and "take control the reaction that authorities must be undertaking".

"The leader needs to realize this is a disaster in the happening, commercially as well as for nature."

Speaking to the media, the official stated he was uninformed of any links between the event and the salmon industry, saying expert examination was necessary before judgments could be made.

"We need to ensure our waterways are safe for nature and sustainable," he said.

"The 1,200 beaches across Tasmania are our treasures and we need to ensure the community and our business sector can operate side-by-side to enjoy our seas efficiently and responsibly."
