EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
