A bettor made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the close of the month increased in the time leading up to former President Trump announced on January 3rd that the president had been apprehended.

A single trader, which joined the platform in December and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436,000 from a initial bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Platform data shows that participants assessed the probability of the president's removal at just under 7% in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

Yet the odds had jumped to over 10% by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the first hours of Saturday, suggesting a sudden change in positions right before the social media post was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a bet based on confidential knowledge," commented Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other individuals also earned tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule put forward on Monday aims to prohibit public officials from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in recent years, with participants able to wager on everything from elections to politics.

This sector faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting space.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
